How is Vinyasa Yoga Practised

How is Vinyasa Yoga Practised What Is Vinyasa Yoga? ChaptersThe Origins of Vinyasa YogaThe Specificities of Vinyasa YogaThe Effects of Vinyasa Yoga“A photographer gets people to pose for him. A yoga instructor gets people to pose for themselves.” - T. GuillemetsOf all the different sporting activities popping up in the UK, yoga is becoming one of the most popular.  Lots of yoga classes are springing up in towns up and down the country and letting go and achieving mindfulness have never been more popular. There are multiple types of yoga practice available, such as ashtanga yoga, hatha yoga or Bikram yoga (or hot yoga) some more interesting than others that correspond to different levels, abilities, or expectations of what a yoga session should entail. Amongst these different styles of yoga, we find Vinyasa yoga, which is becoming more and more popular. But what exactly is this style of yoga with its breathing exercises and muscular reinforcement? You’ll find the answers to these questions and more throughout this article. The origins and foundations of the practice are really important because they can help any aspiring yogi understand exactly what to expect.Whether you're a beginner or an expert, yoga classes are for everyone. (Source: shushipu)There’s Bikram yoga, traditional yoga, prenatal yoga, yoga for kids, dynamic y oga, to name a few, and some types of yoga are very specialised and only familiar to those who actually practise it. This is probably the case with Vinyasa yoga as it’s not the first type of yoga that most people think of.So what exactly is “Vinyasa”?It’s pretty simple, actually. It’s two words that have come together to form a new word. The first term, Nyasa, means “to place”. The second term is also a Sanskrit term and it means “in a specific way”. So basically, rather than saying “to place in a specific way”, you can say “Vinyasa” and it represents what we’re doing.Since we don’t often use terms such as pranayama, Ashtanga, or Kundalini every day in the West, it can be useful to understand what they mean as it can help us better understand what to expect during a yoga session. Thus, “to place in a specific way” implies that this type of yoga will include muscular strengthening or maybe even mindfulness. Let’s have a look.Vinyasa yoga originated from Ashtanga yoga, which is why it’s often also called “Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga”. The success of Vinyasa yoga is probably down to how effective the sequences of poses (asana) are and how each one can be so different from the previous one.Vinyasa yoga was born in India on the grounds of the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute. It was created by Pattabhi Jois and introduced to the West during the 1960s.After its immediate success, especially in the United States of America, this yoga technique started to be modified and changed over the course of the years and adopted the name “Vinyasa Flow Yoga” owing to the essential philosophy of calm fluid movement and an emphasis on the flow between the different yoga poses.Vinyasa yoga started gaining traction in Europe in the 1980s. It’s a simple way to strengthen muscles, meditate, do breathing exercises, and enjoy the other benefits of yoga in a style that is constantly growing in the United States and around the world.Whether you do it in a class or on your own, Vinyasa yoga comes with many benefits. (Source: janeb13)Vinyasa yoga just goes to show that any yoga discipline can spring up and gain success as long as it still respects the core principles of traditional yoga. But what is it that makes Vinyasa yoga different from traditional yoga? You’re about to find out!The Specificities of Vinyasa YogaSynchronisation is at the heart of Vinyasa yoga.Synchronisation is all well and good, but what exactly are we supposed to be synchronising? You don’t need to go on a yoga retreat to understand it. Vinyasa yoga classes and workshops will quickly show you what we mean: it’s the synchronisation of your movements as you breathe, to put it simply! While not exactly essential for Vinyasa yoga, a mat can be very useful. (Source: pixelcreatures)In fact, the difference between a painful pose (or posture) and an easy pose is often whether or not you’re correctly controlling your breathing. Controlling your breathing and u sing the right breathing techniques can help you to move metaphorical mountains when it comes to yoga. Thus, each movement has a different breathing technique allowing us to progress. It can allow us to hold a position with less effort and without twisting or tensing, manage stress, and also be aware of the here and now.So are you interested in learning to do yoga? The basic idea is to let your breathing guide your movement in such a way so that it is the guiding force behind our actions, controls the rhythm, and allows us to move more fluidly as ballet dancers. Additionally, it can help us eliminate toxins and put together harmonious sequences of asanas. After just a few exercises, you’ll see that Vinyasa yoga is both a meditative practice and a sporting activity that can help build and tone muscle. You can actually relax and tone at the same time. But first, you should be aware of the effects of Vinyasa yoga and the postures you’re going to adapt. The Effects of Vinyasa YogaIt goe s without saying that yoga is often used to manage stress while working out. Vinyasa yoga is no exception as it works almost every muscle in your body and helps you become more flexible all while working on your mind and spirit at the same time.Vinyasa yoga can help you re-centre in a clear and effective way. (Source: jesslef)Whether you’re in a gym or sports hall or not, the principles of yoga are the same, even when you’re doing Vinyasa yoga. If you take a free Vinyasa yoga tutorial, for example, you’ll soon realise what the effects and benefits of this type of yoga are. You can’t argue with getting healthier while also managing stress. In order to tone muscle and improve your balance, you’re going to chain together several yoga poses. Some are more difficult than others and you have to hold that position. By practising regularly, you’ll soon be able to hold these poses without too much difficulty. You don’t need to throw in the towel if you mess up. By controlling you r breathing, you’ll soon be able to make these poses much easier to achieve as it's your breathing that will guide you and facilitate your movements. In fact, if you let your breathing guide you, it’ll also help you with mindfulness meditation. We can’t forget that breathing is the key to improving your wellbeing. A better knowledge of yourself while breathing is a great way to anchor yourself in reality. This anchor can help you focus and concentrate, something which you’ll work on throughout your Vinyasa yoga sessions as you move from pose to pose. There’s nothing better than yoga to help you focus and concentrate and achieve personal your goals, for example! This is why Vinyasa yoga, with its breathing exercises, fluid movement, and harmony between body and mind, is so popular. It allows you to gain physical fitness while managing stress, improving your concentration, and improving your mental and spiritual wellbeing. Ready to grab your yoga mat and try a sun salutation? If you're not sold on this type of yoga class, don't forget that there's also Ashtanga yoga (power yoga), Bikram yoga (hot yoga), and Hatha yoga, to name a few, all of which can be practised by beginners and generally include a sequence of poses and pranayama breathing techniques. If you're not quite ready to attend a group class, don't forget that you can find a private yoga teacher on sites like Superprof. Additionally, many of the tutors on Superprof offer the first hour of tutoring for free so you can try out the different yoga styles and see which one's right for you. Almost every yoga style includes gentle and challenging yoga postures as well as controlling your breath. There are also a lot of places offering yoga for beginners. Even if you think you've got no flexibility, you can join other aspiring yogis and get the energy flowing out of your chakras. Even if you don't believe in the spirituality of the yogic practice and its restorative properties, you can't deny the physical benefits of all breaking a sweat while doing a yoga routine, especially if you're doing Bikram yoga, which takes place in a heated yoga studio. If you have any concerns about starting yoga, make sure you consult your doctor first!Once you've gotten your clean bill of health, you can start looking for yoga classes near me...

Judging School Performance

Judging School Performance By now, everyone has heard something negative about Americas public schools. They are falling behind foreign countries; they dont prepare kids for college or future employment; its the teachers fault; its the bureaucrats fault, reads the news. Simply put, many schools in America need help, and now the government is making it official as it could soon label three-fourths of public schools failing under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, according to an article in the Washington Post. The Obama administration recently announced that it would revamp former president George W. Bushs original education initiative. Arne Duncan, Federal Education Secretary, believes that the school ratings system Bush put in place with the No Child Left Behind Act is in jeopardy itself because the law is no longer workable. Obama and Duncan are pushing to lighten up on the ratings system, labeling fewer schools as failing, but cracking down hard on under-achieving schools. Duncan said that the No Child Left Behind Act had created dozens of ways for schools to fail and very few to help them succeed. Duncan and the Federal Education Department estimate that up to 82% of schools could be labeled failing, an increase from last years 37%. The No Child Left Behind Act creates benchmarks for schools to rise steadily nationwide, in hopes of creating adequate education for all students. However, critics say that the law creates a blunt pass/fail approach, and the many schools labeled as failing are actually performing well. Under this act, schools must test students in every grade third through eighth and once in high school on reading and math skills. Those scores, combined with attendance and graduation rates, let the government determine if schools are making adequate yearly progress toward becoming proficient. Also, the No Child Left Behind Act set a lofty goal of a 100% proficiency rate by 2014. Obama is planning to measure schools based on their students academic growth. Schools that excel will be rewarded, schools that fall in the middle would be given more flexibility to improve themselves and failing schools at the bottom will face strict federal mandates to adopt changes to improve. The Obama administrations efforts to revamp public education have been slowed by budget cuts; however, he hopes that threatening to label three-fourths of schools as failing will force lawmakers to take stronger actions to improve education. Whether Obamas actions are a threat or serious, they have sparked movement from both parties in Congress to create education legislature. Sen. Lamar Alexander, Republican from Tennessee and former education secretary, said he would cooperate with Democrats on the education debate, as Sen. Tom Harkin, Democrat from Iowa and chairman on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee said he wants to create a bipartisan bill before Easter.

At the same time, they are becoming more sedentary: one out of two adults don’t engage in any physical activity whatsoever. The WHO suggests a minimal physical activity corresponding to 10,000 steps a day - which most Britains never come close to. The most troubling element is that young people are the most affected by this inactivity. Those between 18-24 are less physically active than the 55-64 year-olds. More work happens behind a desk, more recreational activities take place in front of a screen, there is less walking… This evolution does not bode well. For an excess of body fat can have far-reaching consequences and provoke many pathologies: cardiovascular illnesses, diabetes, joint problems, respiratory problems, depressions, several types of cancer (notably of the liver, uterus or breast). So how can you lose weight and burn fat if you don’t like doing sports? Learning yoga can be a good alternative if you want to lose fat in your thighs and hips and work toward your ideal weight.Lose Weight with YogaThis is THE most important question to ask yourself before starting on a diet.Do you want to loose weight or do you need to lose weight? It’s not the same thing.Indeed, your idea of ideal weight is probably probably influenced by society’s dictates. The image in your mirror doesn’t correspond to the photoshopped models in the magazines - and so you consider yourself too fat and want to lose weight. The second is a major health issue. You need to lose weight because your health is at risk.To give you an idea of what applies to you, it is important to calculate your BMI, or Body Mass Index. There are sites that let you calculate it by simply entering your height and weight. Here is the official classification of the WHO (World Health Organisation):Less than 16: anorexia or malnutritionBetween 16.5 and 18.5: thinBetween 18.5 and 25: normal weightBetween 25 and 3 0: overweightBetween 30 and 35: moderate obesity (class 1)Between 35 and 40: high obesity (class 2)More than 40: massive or morbid obesity (class 3)As long as your BMI is situated between 18.5 and 25, your weight is normal. No need for draconian measure if you want to lose a few pounds. Simply practising physical activity will help you keep in shape. If your BMI is higher than 25, you are overweight - to a greater or lesser extent. Consulting a doctor and/or a nutritionist is the best first step to understanding where your excess weight comes from and how to remedy it. Surplus weight can have several causes:A diet too rich in fat or sugar: a nutritionist can help you reduce your fat consumption and improve the quality of your dietStress: Yoga is particularly well-adapted to help you relax, so your body stockpiles less fat and burns more calories.  Read our yoga teacher's top tips on de-stressing your life.Insufficient physical exercise and a lifestyle that is too sedentary: walk, run , take yoga lessons… There are many solutions to help you reduce your body fat!Can Yoga Help You Lose Weight? So, can yoga help you get rid of superfluous pounds?Broadly speaking: YES.Yoga consists of a sequence of physical poses (asanas), more or less tonic and done at a more or less rapid rhythm depending on the type of yoga. So, as you will be moving, toning and exercising your muscles: yes, yoga can help you get back into shape or stay fit.One aspect is very important when trying to lose weight: pleasure. If you don’t enjoy practicing yoga, you won’t be motivated, will skip yoga lessons or home yoga sessions which means you won’t attain your weight-loss goals.Yoga helps tone and sculpt your body. It can be very useful for a flat stomach, for example. But yoga is much more than a simple physical exercise.Yoga classes offer gentle exercises that can help with weight loss. Photo credit: Fat Yoga via Visualhunt.comIf your weight problems are very grave, yoga courses alone wil l not be enough. You will need an activity with cardio elements to help burn your fat reserves. But yoga can help relieve stress and learn to feel good in your body, so that change can come from within rather than without - help on a mental rather than physical level. If you want to lose more than 20 pounds, it’s important that you get help from a medical professional in weight loss to monitor the physical effects and suggest what strategies are best for you. But yoga can be a great help together with a more intense physical activity.Though it cannot make you lose weight fast, the benefits of yoga for losing stomach fat, building abdominal muscles, improving all-round muscle tone and reducing cellulite are real.In combination with a balanced diet, the gentle muscle exercises provided by yoga can lead to significant results in weight loss.Search for a yoga class here: Yoga near me.What Yoga Style is Best for Weight Loss? There are several different types of yoga. All forms of yoga ar e based on deep breathing and harmony between mind and body. But if the slower aspect of the more traditional yoga forms turn you off, there are more dynamic styles such as Ashtanga or Vinyasa yoga that are particularly well suited to burning calories and toning your body. These yoga styles are also good for eliminating toxins and teaching you to listen to your body and its signals for hunger and fullness.Additionally, many yoga poses help modulate the adrenal and thyroid glands which help regulate our metabolism. You can also try Bikram Yoga if there are no contraindications in your case. It is basically a form of Hatha Yoga (the most common yoga style) executed in a room heated to 40 °C and with 40% humidity to facilitate the evacuation of toxins.A Bikram Yoga lesson generally lasts 90 minutes and is made up of 26 poses and two breathing exercises. Become more flexible 2. Manage stress 3. Learn to meditate 4. A physical activity you can do at home 5. Increased concentrationLose weight with anti-stress yogaYoga helps you manage stress - while some people lose their appetites under stress, others find their appetite increase. They eat because they’re stressed, and so they gain weight. Regular practice of any form of yoga helps decrease stress levels. Being more relaxed, the munchies disappear.Yoga also helps improve sleep patterns. Sleep problems are intimately linked to stress. Some meditation or yoga exercises just before going to sleep can help reduce stress levels and improve the quality of sleep. Having less trouble falling asleep and sleeping through the nig ht, you won’t be as tired when the alarm rings.Yoga’s ultimate goal is harmonyBeyond physical activity, yoga is above all a philosophy and introducing it into your life can fundamentally change you. You will feel better in your mind and thus in your body.Trying out yoga means incorporating it in your lifestyle. You’ll see - though you might say “meditation is not for for me” or “yoga is too slow, I really need something more energising” or even “I don’t really like all that spiritual stuff”, and yet, with the right yoga teacher, you will soon find yourself slowly adopting all the facets of yoga into your daily life.Basically, you are aiming for harmony between mind and body. Even if you need to lose more than 20 pounds, you will find that, after a few yoga sessions, those pounds that were ruining your life now seem meaningless.Yoga is not a competition, as any yoga teacher will tell you: neither against others nor against yourself. The ultimate goal is not to mas ter all the poses, lose X pounds or test your limits - the point of yoga is to make peace with yourself and learn to accept your body.Finding A Personal Trainer Specialising in Yoga to Lose WeightOf course, you can do home yoga but if you are just starting out you might need a little motivational help.Is the secret to eating less and healthily to be found at the feet of a yoga sports coach? Why use a personal trainer specialising in yoga?Hiring a yoga-oriented sports coach can be a good solution if you need to:Lose stomach fatLose thigh fatLose arm fatLose weight on your hipsLose weight in your buttocksTone your upper thighsLose weight in your faceReduce celluliteThe advantage of a sports coach is that they have training in something besides yoga. If he or she decides you need more energetic physical exercises to lose weight fast, they can give you advice on other sports, such as skipping rope, cardio exercises, weight lifting, pilates or other muscular reinforcement sports in additi on to yoga.A yoga-oriented personal trainer will have the advantage of both understanding how the body works and being open to other alternatives than your average sports coach. This is why we suggest you try and unite these two aspects - yoga teacher and personal trainer - in one person.Adopting a healthy dietIf you can, make sure your personal trainer also has a good knowledge of nutrition. He can give you advice on how to eat healthy to lose weight, such as:The number of calories a day you should be eatingHigh-fat foods you should avoidHealthy, filling snacks for in-betweenEtc.The stress relief that practising yoga brings helps you stick to a healthy diet. Photo credit: foodswings via Visual HuntIn addition to tailoring your sports programme to your individual needs, they can help you define the right diet to aid you on the road to your dream body - as you define it.A personal trainer will motivate you.A sports coach is also a good motivator. Alone at home, there is a tendency to abandon all your good resolutions fairly quickly, while a personal trainer who will be giving classes once or twice a week won’t let you skimp. No way around it - they will make sure you do the exercises.A few additional tips for losing weight:Green tea is an excellent anti-oxidantGreen vegetables are low in fatBanish meal substitutes: they are generally high in sodium or sugarWhite meat is leaner than red meatDrinking frequently helps against the munchiesAvoid quick-release sugars in the morning and opt for salty and fatty foods such as eggs and whole-grain meatAvoid fad diets! Hyper-protein, Dukan, cabbage-soup diets… none have proven themselves in the long run, and all are catalysts for the famous yo-yo effect. The key is a balanced diet, not too fatty, not too poor either, and regular physical activitiy.Ask our personal trainers if you don’t believe me!To sum it up:No need to follow the newest fad diet. Concentrating instead on healthy, well-balanced eating habits while d oing physical exercise is usually enough to stay in shape!Yoga is not a magic wand that will magically let you lose weight - but it is useful for toning your body and muscling it evenly. In addition to aiding in weight loss, yoga is also a natural anti-depressant. It will help you manage stress and let go of your negative thoughts. The vicious stress-nibbling-pounds circle will be broken, leaving the happier yoga-healthy eating-healthy body circle in its place.A personal trainer specialising in yoga can help with nutritional advice and other, more intense physical activities to complement your yoga lessons.Be careful not to hurt yourself when doing yoga poses. Brigham Young University A Student Interview

Brigham Young University A Student Interview The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. Spencer is a Phoenix tutor and 2010 graduate of Brigham Young University. He holds a Bachelors degree in International Relations and Russian and tutors several subjects, specializing inHistory tutoring, Reading tutoring, and Writing tutoring. Check out what Spencer had to say about his time at Brigham Young University: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or rural is the campus? Did you feel safe on campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Spencer: The Brigham Young University campus has a very suburban feel. Most student housing is within walking distance of campus, so walking or riding a bike is sufficient. Student parking is rather limited, especially during peak class times. The city does provide buses to and from major downtown areas, including a new light rail line to Salt Lake City. These are reasonably priced, and students can often secure special year- or semester-long commuter passes. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Spencer:Overall, the availability of professors, advisers, and teaching assistants is excellent. Almost without exception, the people I worked with were interested in my education, and they were willing to do everything they could to help me succeed. I would highly recommend contacting professors and advisers early (before the start of term) with any questions. This distinguishes you from the crowd, and it can help establish you as a serious student. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Spencer:Brigham Young University is a very social place. There are a large number of clubs, and numerous social events each week on campus, including free concerts, educational forums, dances, and department-sponsored events. The athletics scene is also very good, with many events each semester. Student athletic passes are reasonably priced, especially for the football games. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Spencer:Business (in the Marriott School of Management) is one of the flagship programs at Brigham Young University. The School of Family Life and the foreign language departments are also well represented. I double majored in International Relations and Russian because of my love of diversity and cross-cultural experiences. I have lived in several countries, and I enjoy sharing experiences with people from many different walks of life. The university leadership is very supportive of the International Relations program, and each semester there are amazing speakers, including ambassadors, government leaders, noted authors, military officials, and journalists. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Spencer:The overall social scene is excellent, and making friends was usually easy. Some of the larger 100-level freshman classes were intimidating due to class size (100+ students). I strongly recommend the smaller 100-level Honors classes, as the professors are better and the class sizes are much smaller (15-40 students). The smaller classes give you a chance to create study groups, make friends, and find out about new activities. There are also dozens of clubs on campus, ranging from creative writing and fencing to hiking and astronomy. Find one you like and join it. There are no sororities or fraternities on campus. The numerous clubs seem to fill that niche, and they do a pretty good job, in my opinion. Each college also has chapters of the applicable national honor societies for its disciplines. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Spencer:Brigham Young University has an amazing career fair each year. Numerous Fortune 500 companies, local businesses, and government agencies recruit here. There is both a fall and winter career fair, and lists of the attending companies can be found online or with a guidance counselor. The general guidance counselors for the university are honestly not great. They basically refer you to 100-level study skills classes and try to help you find your discipline of choice. In their defense, there are dozens of colleges and majors on campus, and they cannot know everything. If you want good academic advice, identify two or three majors that are somewhat interesting to you, and schedule an appointment to meet with the college-specific counselors. They are very knowledgeable and super helpful. They can get you squared away with entry-level classes to take, or even professors to speak with. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Spencer:There are dozens of wonderful places to study on campus. The library is vast and extremely roomy! There are also small group and individual study areas sprinkled across the many buildings throughout campus. I could always find somewhere to study, and the furniture, WiFi access, and facilities were almost always amazing! VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Spencer:Provo is a quiet little town with a decent array of fun things to do. It is also a very religious community, so the recreational activities are conservative. Entertainment includes movie theaters, a water park, an arcade, an ice skating rink, an indoor climbing gym, restaurants (a surprising number of great ethnic food choices), and two shopping malls. Where Provo really shines is its access to wilderness areas and natural areas. There are waterfalls, hiking and biking trails, ski resorts, lakes, and mountain climbing opportunities within a very short distance! If you love the outdoors, you will love Provo! The winters are actually pretty mild (when compared to the Midwest or Northeast), and the summers are amazing! The mountains are gorgeous all year long, and there is always a new trail, national park, or waterfall to go visit. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Spencer:There are over 30,000 students at Brigham Young University, with students from every state and dozens of different countries. Although the vast majority are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (or the Mormon Church), which is the school sponsor, members of other faiths are welcomed and treated with respect. I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I met Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, and Catholic students at Brigham Young University. I always felt that students of other faiths and backgrounds were treated well and found a good home at Brigham Young University, though I respect that some non-Mormons have different experiences and opinions. I found the number of students to be daunting at first, but, in general, I liked the rhythm and pace of campus life. Once you find your college or sub-group, the big tide of humanity is something you can just swim on, rather than drown in. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Spencer:I was the Head Teaching Assistant for a professor who taught a class called The History of Creativity. Every year, during his lecture on Greek philosophy, he would come dressed as Socrates and engage in a debate on ethics with class members using the Socratic method. This really made the discussion come alive, and helped the students place themselves in history. Although I worked as a teaching assistant for several semesters, I never tired of this lecture because of the way it helped bring history to life for myself and the students. Recognizing Screen Addiction in Kids with ADHD

Recognizing Screen Addiction in Kids with ADHD If youre the parent of a child who spends hours each day playing video games, watching YouTube videos, or checking out friends social media posts, youve probably wondered at times whether all of this screen time is problematic or if its just part of growing up in the 21st century. While all kids benefit from reasonable limits around screen time, kids with ADHD may need stricter limits than most to prevent them from becoming addicted to their screens. ADHD and Screen Addiction Research shows that kids with ADHD are at high risk for developing screen addiction. In fact, its estimated that up to 25% of kids and teens with ADHD suffer from some form of screen addiction. Why are kids with ADHD at increased risk? The constant simulation and reinforcement that comes from fast paced video games, videos, and even social media sites triggers a release of dopamine in the brain the same reward chemical that is implicated in other addictions (food, drugs, gambling, etc.). The brains of kids and adults with ADHD are especially sensitive to this dopamine release, and as a result, have a harder time disengaging from triggering activities than individuals without ADHD. What are the Signs of Screen Addiction? How can you tell if your child is actually addicted to screens, or just really enjoys spending time on his or her iPad or playing video games? Start by thinking back to times when you have tried to set screen time limits. How has your child reacted when you put the limits in place? Most kids will be disappointed and upset, but kids with a screen problem will quickly escalate verbally and sometimes physically. They will act as though their world has just been crushed, and will try just about any tactic to their screen time back. They will often become very sneaky in their efforts to get back in front of a screen, and will typically lie when confronted about their behavior. Children with a screen addiction prefer playing videogames or going online much more than any other activity. In fact, they may seem to no longer truly enjoy any activity that isnt screen-related. As a result, their relationships with friends and family and their grades at school begin to suffer. How Do You Help Your Child Break the Addiction? There isnt a one-size-fits-all approach to screen addiction. However, there are four basic principles that apply to everyone: Limit the number of screens in your home. Keep televisions out of your childs bedroom and do not allow any tablets or smartphones in his or her room overnight. Have one central charging station in the house where everyone leaves their devices at the end of the day and during mealtimes. Limit internet access. Set up website blockers for all of your childs most addictive sites and apps. Also, work with your internet provider to disable your childs internet access at a set time each day. Be a good role model. Set limits around your own screen time. Pay attention to the amount of time you spend on your phone or tablet. If your child sees that you are constantly in front of a screen, then you are sending the message that excessive screen time isnt a problem. With these two steps in place, your path forward will depend on the age of your child and his or her level of screen addiction. If you have a younger child with a relatively mild problem, then putting firm limits into place (e.g., 30 minutes of iPad time a day) and sticking to them despite the behavior outbursts, will help dramatically. In addition, if your child has not started playing videogames yet, then do not let him or her start now. In my experience, the most severe cases of screen addiction among kids and teens with ADHD all involved videogames. With any type of addiction, the best strategy is prevention. If you have an older child or teen with a moderate or severe screen problem, then intervening is more difficult. Kids and teens who are addicted to screens rarely have any insight into their problem, so talking to them about their behavior and encouraging change is very challenging. Its best to work with a child and adolescent cognitive behavioral (CBT) therapist who has experience treating screen addictions. A good therapist will work closely with both you and your child to set limits on screen use at home, and help your child learn to enjoy activities that dont involve their phone, tablet, or gaming console. Screen addiction is a very real problem for many children with ADHD, and its not something that will simply get better on its own. Look out for the signs of screen addiction and get help if you think your child is struggling to manage healthy limits around screen time. ABOUT DR.
